Dosage form
Describes the physical characteristics of a drug
Capsules
Contains powder or liquid in a gelatin capsule
Elixers
Active ingredients are mixed with a liquid, usually a syrup or alcohol, in which they can dissolve. DOES NOT NEED TO BE SHAKEN BEFORE USE.
Emulsions
A mixture of two liquids that are immiscible.
Ointments
An oily semi-solid prepared for topical use
Suppositories
Solids that are inserted into the rectum, vagina or urethra and dissolve.
Suspension
Active ingredients are mixed with a liquid, usually water, in which it cannot dissolve. MUST BE SHAKEN BEFORE USE.
Tablets
Made from compressed powder of active and inactive ingredients
Transdermal patch
A medicated adhesive patch placed on the skin to deliver medication through the skin and into the bloodstream
