Dose Response Curves Flashcards
What are dose response curves used for?
Allows us to compare more than one drug
Arithmetic dose scale
As conc goes up, response increases
Will eventually plateau as all receptors are being used
Difficult to interpret dosing
Log dose scale
Allows us to interpret information easier as more equally spaced out
What is the threshold?
Dose that produces a just-noticeable effect (minimum conc/dose of drug)
What is the ceiling?
Maximum dose of drug
What is the ED50?
Dose that produces 50% of maximum response
Full vs partial agonists
Full agonist will have a maximum response
Partial agonist will have same shape graph but will never reach maximum response of full agonist
How does potency of drugs affect response?
More potent drugs require smaller dose given less frequently
Less potent drugs require larger dose given more frequently to have same effect
