How long must a donor typically wait between donations?
8 weeks
Define: Self exclude
After donation, the donor must be given the opportunity to indicate that the blood collected should NOT be used for transfusion.
Minimum age requirement for donation
17 years old minimum. Note: elderly donors can be accepted with physician approval.
Maximum oral temperature for donation
37.5° (99.6°F)
Minimum acceptable hemoglobin and hematocrit for allogenic donors
Hemoglobin 12.5 g/dL and hematocrit 38%
Minimum acceptable hemoglobin and hematocrit for autologous donors
Hemoglobin 11 g/dL and hematocrit 33%. Note final unit must be collected at least 3 days before surgery.
Acceptable pulse rate for donors
50-100 beats per minute. Note: pulse of < 50 may be acceptable for athletes.
Number of weeks postpartum to qualify as a donor
6 weeks
Diseases/conditions that qualify for permanent deferment
History of viral hepatitis
Positive test for HBsAg or other viral marker
History/symptoms of AIDS. participation in high risk behavior
Receipt of injection of bovine insulin from the UK
Receipt of human growth hormone
Dane particle
The infectious virus of hepatitis B (HBV)
Positive anti-HBs
Indicates recovery and/or immunity. Note: will be positive post recovery and post HBV vaccination.
