donating blood Flashcards
Philanthropy
“giving time, talent, or treasure for the sake of another.” (give without receiving)
blood transfusion
A way of adding blood to your body after an illness or injury. If your body is missing one or more of the components that make up healthy blood, a transfusion can help supply what your body is missing
Uses of blood components:
Is made up of several different parts including red and white blood cells, plasma and platelets. Whole blood is blood that has all of them. It’s more likely you need blood for a specific component
Red Blood cells
carry oxygen to the organs and tissues and remove carbon dioxide through the lungs. It is used during emergencies, surgeries and cancer treatments
White blood cells
protect the body from infection. They can also carry viruses and bacteria and, for this reason, are removed from any donated blood
Platelets
provide the basis for clotting, which helps control bleeding. It is used to treat patients with bleeding disorders and cancer

How many canadians give blood?

life cycle of blood
Your body automatically replaces all the blood you donate, your plasma is replaced within hours, platelets within days and red blood cells in about 56 days
How much blood do you donate
Each time you donate about 450ml (a pint)
Sickle cell anemia
In sickle cell anemia, some red blood cells are shaped like sickles or crescent moons. These sickle cells also become rigid and sticky, which can slow or block blood flow.
What causes sickle cell anemia
It’s caused by genetic changes (mutations) that lead to abnormal red blood cells and anemia
Sickle cell disease is not contagious, it is inherited by two sickle cell genes, one from each parent. People can inherit a sickle cell gene from one parent and a different abnormal hemoglobin gene from the other parent
