Definition of Domestic violence (domestic abuse) is that occur in
-home within a family unit when a family member, partner or ex-partner attempts to physically or psychologically dominate or harm the other.
Types Of Domestic Violence :
I -Wife abuse.
II- Child abuse.
Wife Abuse =Women abuse = battered wives
- It is an intentional act that one person uses in a relationship to gain power and control over another person.
- It is a violence or abuse [physical, psychological, sexual (unwanted or forced sexual activity), financial or emotional] directed toward a domestic partner. It is violence by men against women
Any woman can experience domestic violence regardless of
race, age, ethnic or religious group, class, disability or lifestyle.
The three phases of the cycle of violence are:
- Tension Building Phase
often described by victims as “walking on eggshells”. - Explosion Phase
hitting, slapping, punching, spitting, throwing objects,
etc. - “Honeymoon” Phase
characterized by apologies and promises that the
violence will not happen again.
Physical Injuries:
Battered women present with
multiple physical injuries in the hospital emergency room, and private clinics.
The incidence of injuries from wife abuse is
greater than the combined causes of all other injuries to women.

- type, extent, and location
- head,
- neck,
- face and
- trunk.
All types of blunt injury may be sustained. Heavy punch in the face may cause
black eyes.
Hitting the head results in
scalp bruises.
Large deep bruises are predominated over :
- over tops of the shoulders
- front of the chest
- sides of the body
- lower back
- Lacerations.
- Fractures of long bones.
Emotional abuse often leads to :
- substance abuse
- low self-esteem
- feelings of powerlessness
- isolation
- anxiety, depression
- post-traumatic stress disorder
“Battered woman syndrome”
BWS) is a mentaldisorderthat develops in victims of domestic violence as a result of serious, long-term abuse
These battered women:
1-Minimize and deny the abuse.
2-Block the abuse incidents from their memory.
3-Have anxiety, fearfulness or panic because of constant stress.
4-Have recurrent flashbacks of battering episodes.
5-Have specific fears and are continually watching out for signs of further harm.
