Domestic Violence: Flashcards
1
Q
Domestic Violence:
A
Domestic Violence is a pattern of assaultive and coercive behaviors resulting in power and control over an intimate partner.
- Providing psychoeducation to the victim of domestic violence can help him or her understand the dynamics of abuse and not feel isolated.
- Developing a safety plan with the client is often the first and primary step in treatment.
- Providing couples therapy when domestic violence is occurring is contraindicated because events in session could lead to abusive explosions afterward.
- Confrontational interventions from professionals (urging the victim to leave the abuser) can often re-traumatize the victim and increase feelings of shame, which may prevent progress.
