Domestic Violence Flashcards
Feminist view on domestic violence
They believe family is male dominated and they use their physical power (domestic violence) to assert control.
Supported by the Dobashes- found violence was triggered when men felt their authority was being challenged and saw it as the masculine response to regaining power when the wives ‘stept out of line.’
Why do women not report domestic violence
1/4 women experience domestic violence but only 25% of the incidents are reported to the police because;
- they’re afraid that the violence will get worse
- scared of being killed
- believe it’s a personal matter
- ashamed
Reasons for domestic abuse
- social deprivation-low income lead to disputes about money and increase stress
- to maintain women’s subordinate position in the family and show women men are in charge
- to fulfill Mens sexual needs- the feel women are there to serve them and their needs and can become angry when they’re not met.
Two types of domestic abuse offenders
Narcissistic offender-had hostile behaviour towards women and think domestic violence was acceptable in some circumstances and also emotionally abusive.
Borderline offender- less emotionally abusive but when physical would make extreme threats. controlling about money and actively discouraged partner from going out.
Masculinity and violence
- Domestic violence seen as part of masculine identity where the use of force is seen to give you status.
- They feel it’s important to assert their dominance and authority and not allow themselves to be pushed around by women as it would challenge their sense of masculinity.
- Because of this they’re not ashamed of their actions but rather feel they were pushed into it by the women.
