Segregated conjugal role - separated roles. Male is the breadwinner and the female is the housewife + carer

Yes housework is becoming more equal but why ?
1- more women in paid work - equal pay act 1970 encouraged women to go to work = more authority and power in the family as no longer financially dependent on the husband
Gershuny- found as wives went into paid employment they did less housework and men did more.
Lead to decision making being more shared as Women more assertive to ask for equality
2. - improved status and rights of Women, more unemployment and can Vote encourages men to see them more as equals and not just housewives and mothers. Due to change in gender norms…

3.weaker gender identity’s- couples have more choice and are free to pick and mix roles. Not constricted by gender old gender norms. Weakens gender division in housework and childcare shows trend towards the symmetrical family.
No housework is not becoming more equal- the feminist view
The feminist view - Oakley - rejects the march of progress view and symmetrical family because Women still do majority of housework.
found only 15% of husbands had high participation in housework.
Dual burden women do paid work and unpaid housework so work doesn’t benefit women its a added burden

Child care and emotional work
Child care-Dads take take of children in less than 4% of family’s. However 78% of dads played with their kids showing that they do the fun side of parenthood, whilst the mother is left with the cleaning and taking care of children.
Emotional care- mother responsible for managing the emotions and feelings of the family eg buying presents, showing physical love, sooth over arguments, plan events. The family benifits from mums emotional work but mums rarely do as hardly ever thanked cause it’s seen as their gendered duty. Leads women to be less happy within marriage and feel emotional loneliness.
