-1951 conservative housing manifesto promised to build 300,000 houses a year
-rebuild housing stock destroyed during the war, replace many slums people lived in before the war

education:
conservatives continued the tripartite system which developed after Butler Act 1944- secondary modern, technical schools, and grammar schools
-by the beginning of the 1960s people began to question whether fair

-Clear Air Act 1956-aimed to prevent the smog of the early 1950s
-housing and factory acts aimed to improve living standards and working conditions
-butler as Home Secretary (1957-62) more liberal than other conservatives - The Homicide Act 1957 restricted when death penalty would be imposed
