What is domestic abuse?
Any form of physical, sexual, psyxhological or finical abuse which might amount to criminal conduct and which takes place with the context of a relationship

Who is most at risk of abuse?
Women, tend to be younger Pregnant Women who are seperated Mental health problems Long term illness/disability
What are the different types of domestic abuse?
Situational couple violence - fighting or verbal agression not involving control
Coercive and controlling behaviour - violence may also be a feature. Isolate somone and degrade them, low self esteem
AVDR for domestic abuse?
A = ask - non judgemental language, private setting V = validate - show someone you are concerned, remove blame and assure you believe them D = document - use pt's own words, be specific and detailed R = refer - signposting, patient takes action rather than you (Scottish Domestic Abuse helpline, Scottish Womens Aid)
What are beavioural signs of domestic abuse?
Low self esteem, anxiuous, sad, unease alcohol Constant phoning or texting partner Missed appts Partner my insist on female clincian Inapporopriate clothing to hide trauma
What are signs of victims of abuse?
Repeated injuries, dental injuries TMJ problems Bruises at different stages of healing Orofacial pain Delay on seeking help for injury Facial brusing or strange marks around neck Marks on ears
What else can people do for domestic abuse?
Put cards in toilets and waiting room
Have staff wear ASC badges (ask, support,care)
Allow patients to use their phone in the surgery to contact agencies
Link with local domestic abuse agencies
Develop a protocol to allow you to get people on their own if partners are present and to alert others to issues
