What does Domain Name System refer to?
refers to both a protocol as well as a system
Protocol - corresponds domain name with the IP Address
System - Keeps track of who “owns” each public IP address and the mapping of IP addresses to a domain name (ex. 12.33.100.68 = att.net)
Generic domain v. Sponsored domain
Generic - anyone can grab it as long as they aren’t used (.com, .net, .info)
Sponsored - must go to the organization to get permission to use (.gov, .mil, .edu)
**What are Regional Internet Registries?
Geographical proxys for IANA (Internet Assigned Numbers Authority)
IANA gave IP addresses to Geographical authorities so they could assign them in their own regions (North America, Europe+Middle East, Asia-Pacific, Latin America-Caribbean, Africa)
