Tools for Assessing MH

A

Tools to assess: BASC, Conners, CDI, RCMAS, SSIS, SRSS, BESS, ABAS, Vineland, MASC (multidimensional anxiety scale for children); client interview; teacher/parent report and interviews; observations
● Screener: BASC-3 BESS, do not use ODRs (often biased), Systematic Screener for Behaviour Disorders (SSBD) (externalizing and internalizing symptoms)
● Transactional Model (Masten study): functioning in one domain impacts functioning in another.
o Externalizing problems undermined academic competence which later contributed to
internalizing problems
o Externalizing problems in early childhood forecast problems in all three domains by young
adulthood
o Internalizing disorders had little if any effect on academic competence
● We know poor readers are at risk for greater mental health difficulties and delinquency
● Students receiving services for EBD tend to fall behind academically
● Ecological model (Bronfenbrenner): bidirectional relationship between individual and environment.

Teir 2 Checkin/check out

A

o Most effective for disruptive students with bx problems (function to get attention)
o Students check in with adult at beginning of class/day to set bx goals and then check out with
student at the end to see if goals were met and earn reward
o 5 components: morning check in, daily progress reports, teacher feedback, afternoon check
out, aren’t involvement.
o Increase positive, daily contact with mentor/adult, direct, regular feedback on student
performance, reinforcement of expectations, increase home-school communication, positive reinforcement for meeting goals, self-monitoring tool, increases structure, improves student accountability
o Cons: need already school wide PBIS because rests on understandings of clear expectations; requires a lot of teacher support, not effective for escape bx
