instructional Consultation (IC)
Problem-solving approach focuses on academic concerns within ecological framework
○ Teaming with teachers/families (collaborative approach)
○ Triadic relationships between student, instruction, and task/environment
○ Central elements: a) problem-solving stages b) communication and relationship skills c) use of
evidence-based assessment and intervention strategie
Know the problem solving model:
- Identify problems, define problems, design plan intervention with a team, implement the intervention, and then progress monitoring the intervention.
Behavioural models:
● Solution focused and collects data to create behavioural change.
● Goal: reduce frequency of undesired behaviour by altering relationship between student behavior and
environment.
● Basic steps: a) identify problem, b) design and implement plan, c) monitor effectiveness, continue data collection, d) evaluate/adjust plan
Mental Health Consultation –
always consider feelings of both consultee and student
● Change teacher’s perceptions – leading to change in her bx — changing student’s bx – changing bx of
others
With diverse audiences:
Differentiating the information you provide (i.e. visuals, etc.)
Understanding the audience (parent as sped teacher vs. parent as accountant). Jargon
Check your own biases/know your privilege
Asking questions, come in without assumptions
