condensed story, ranging in length from 2,000 to 10,000 words, often with a purpose that is singular or limited.

folk tales
adapt from culture to culture (share customs and beliefs)
prose narratives that follow traditional storylines that arise from oral traditions
legends
narratives that include creation stories and explain tribal beginnings

entirely fictional pieces

animal characters clearly display human personalities
myths
evoke events of a long time past and concern the adventures/misadventures of gods, giants, heroes nymphs, villians, etc.

poetry
works written in verse, with a meter or rhyme scheme
narrative, dramatic, lyric
alliteration
the repetition of usually initial consonant sounds in two or more words/syllables
analogy
a comparison of similar traits between dissimilar things in order to highlight a point of similarity
figurative language
a word or phrase that departs from literal language. most common: metaphor and simile
hyperbole
deliberate exaggeration for effect
imagery
words or phrases that appeal to the senses
irony
the use of words to suggest the opposite of their intended meaning
literal language
the actual definition of the word
