Engineering Management
An art and science of planning, organizing, allocating resources, and directing and controlling activities that have a technological component.
Strategic Planning
Involves senior management to set the mission, vision, and long-term and short term goals of the company.
Tactical Planning
Concerned with activating the strategy to make it work.
Operational Planning
Involves managers at middle and lower levels to break down the company goals into short-term objectives for easy implementation.
Organizing
Arranging and relating work so that it can be done efficiently by the appropriate people.
Functional Organization
Employees are grouped within functional types and perform a specialized set of tasks and report to one boss.
Projectized Organization
The team members report directly to the project manager and the project manager has complete authority over projects.
Matrix Organization
A combination of functional and projectized organizational structure. The organization is grouped by both function and product. An employee may have to report to a functional manager and a project manager in this structure.
Allocating Resources
Can be in the form of capital, equipment or people. Engineering managers assigns roles and responsibilities to the individuals they manage at the right position and at the right time.
Directing
The management function of motivating, supervising, and influencing people so as to achieve the strategic goals of the organization. Engineering manager to ensure that engineering decisions are made in a timely manner.
Controlling
A management function or measuring performance and comparing the results with established standards to ensure that the work conforms to requirements and brings the desired outcome.
Baseline standard
Sets a guideline for an expected performance level. Established in the form of: Number (how many), quality (how good), acceptance level (how well) and time (how soon)
Benchmarking
A method to establish standards.
