How should you approach your patient?
Never reach over a fearful dog, allow dog to come to you and offer a low non-threatening hand, ask owner if it’s okay for you to interact with the dog
What is a normal greeting between canines?
Approaching in a C shaped direction, Sniff each other’s anal region, sniff the flank, finally going nose to nose o greet each other.
How should lifting/carrying dogs be dealt with?
15KG-Place one hand in front of dog’s chest and the other over the tail
20KG-Two people needed, one person place hand under chest and neck, other places hand under abdomen and other around its back end.
What way do you restrain the patient for cranial end examination?
Stand to one side of dog, place arm under neck and away from your face, place other arm over dogs back and apply pressure with elbow to ensure dog sits.
What way do you restrain a patient for caudal end examination?
Keep one arm under the neck, place other hand under abdomen to ensure dog is in standing position
How would you go about examining the ventral abdominal cavity?
With the dog in lateral recumbency, one person hold the front legs and the other the hind legs, roll dog over onto its back and extend the legs.
How do you restrain the patient for IV injection into the jugular vein?
Stand to one side of the dog and place one hand under chin, head is raised and brought close to the chest, the other hand restrains the head by holding the back of the neck
Where can you detect a pulse in the dog? What are the normal pulse, breathing and temp rates?
Femoral artery inside the medial thigh
Pulse: 70-140
Respiratory: 10-30
Temp: 38.3-39.2
What to look out for when clipping nails?
How do you express anal glands?
The quick, blood supply
Palpate the 4 and 8 o’clock position of the anus

What is stated in the microchipping of dogs regulation 2015?
From 31st March 2016 all dogs must be microchipped by the time they are 12 weeks old or before they leave their place of birth.
