What is Classical Conditioning?

A

A Unconditioned stimulus followed by an unconditioned response. Dog isnt taught the response.
Ex: Presenting a bowl of food and salivating.

A

System of reinforcement based on reward and punishment.
Positive rewards based on desired behavior.
Positive punishment is adding something unpleasant to a situation. (shock collars)
Negative punishment is removing something desirable (favorite toy and or treat)

what is Counter Conditioning?

A

A method used to relearn an association.
Ex: a dog that has a negative association to grooming can be taught positive association by doing/giving something positive during the room.

What is Extinction?

A

Reducing or removing any reinforcement associated with that behavior.
Ex: Dog whines to get attention when told to stop, if you give in and give him what he wants after being told no he knows to keep doing it. Only give treat or attention when whining stops and the behavior of stopping is rewarded not the whining.

What is Habituation?

A

Dog exposed to something over and over again may gradually stop reacting to it. Repeated exposure to have zero response, no reward, and no punishment. Similar to Desensitization.

A

Decreasing a negative response to something that upsets them by exposure.

What is Flooding?

A

Incredibly stressful for dogs, do not use. Flooding is the stimulus the dog reacts to in an intense prolonged level. Can be very traumatic for the dog.

A

A

The point where the dog moves from one emotional state to another.
Ex: Dog is calm having normal behavior to over-excitement or reactivity.

A

Use sound to approach and come from behind/side and brush up against the body.

A

Yes. They can still read your body language and energy that comes off of you and its easier to do that while talking to them.
