What are some Skeletal Problems?
Based on breed and genetics,
older dogs get arthritis(can be an issue with standing for long period of time)
Hip dysplasia (hip joint grows improperly.)
smaller breeds-Luxating Patella (knee cap pops out of place)
What are considered Topical Problems?
Sores, scabs, cysts, warts, scars, tumors, superficial injuries, abnormalities.
What are some Coat Problems?
Matting, Hair loss, Mange, Diet can cause issues with coat, autoimmune issues, wearing of collar or harness, bald patches.
What are the different head shapes?
Brachycephalic, Mesaticephalic, Dolichocephalic
What is a Brachycephalic head shape?
Smashed or pushed in face like a pug, french bull dog ect.
What concerns will you have when grooming a Brachycephalic dog?
They can become too hot-make sure well vented and cool.
Be careful bathing that soap and water dont get into their noses.
Dirt in and around their eyes.
They retain moisture in their folds prone to infections.
Prone to tearing can cause stains around eyes.
What is a Mesaticephalic Head shape?
An average skull shape where it is proportioned moderately to its width.
What is a Dolichocephalic Head shape?
The muzzle is very long compared to its width like grey hounds, poodles, dachshunds.
What are the Ear types?
Prick ears, Drop ears, and Semi-drop Ears.
What are the different Feet types?
Cat feet, Hare feet, Webbed feet (dogs can have a combination of 2 types)
What are Cat feet?
Round, compact, and small with short boned feet.
What are Hare feet?
Elongated because of long bones in the middle of their paws.
What are Webbed Feet?
Skin between the toes. Some webbing goes almost to the tips of their toes like Labs, Newfoundland, Dachshunds, typically any water dog.
What are some different Coat Features?
Beard, Top Knot, Mane and Ruff, Fall, Feathering, Furnishing, skirt.
What is a beard?
coat kept long under the chin and above the lips.
What is a Top Knot?
Top knot is cut into a sphere to give a rounded look.
What is the Mane and Ruff?
Both refer to the fur on the neck thats thicker than the rest of the body.
What is the Mane?
Thick hair on the back of the neck that goes to the topline.
