What concerns will you have when grooming a Brachycephalic dog?

A

They can become too hot-make sure well vented and cool.
Be careful bathing that soap and water dont get into their noses.
Dirt in and around their eyes.
They retain moisture in their folds prone to infections.
Prone to tearing can cause stains around eyes.

What are hot spots?

A

The side effects of itching or biting the same spot repeatedly. Its a pink skin lesion that is moist, warm and sometimes has hair loss around it. It can spread quickly, brushing or touching can be painful to the dog.

Swelling and redness inside ears
Increased itching, especially around ears.

Inflamed throat-usually leads to snoring more.

A

Red bumps or black heads usually found on chin and lips. Usually goes away by 1 years old.

What is Black Skin Disease? AKA: “Alopecia X”

A

Type of hair loss symmetrical on both sides of the body. Overall coat will fall out, sometimes followed by undercoat. Bald skin will darken and appear black. Not painful.

A

Harmless fungus that can be caused by too much stress in the immune system.

A

Skin disease caused by mites. typically results in patchy and generalized hair loss all over body (NOT symmetrical like Black skin disease)

A

Red warm swollen ears
Foul smell (typically in ears)
Excessive licking and or chewing of paws
Greasy hair and dandruff
Red or rusty color of hair between toes

A

What are the 2 types of Mange?

A

Sarcoptic and Demodectic mange.

What is Sarcroptic Mange? AKA “Canine Scabies”

A

VERY CONTAGIOUS with dogs and humans. Mites that typically effect the face, legs, elbows and ears. Appear as red bumps like bug bites.

What is Demodectic Mange? AKA “Red Mange”

A

Caused by demodectic mites usually transfered in puppys first few days of life transfered by mother through physical contact. Does not cause problems for most dogs. Not contageous.

Localized Demodectic, Generalized, and Demodectic Pododermatitis mange.
