Does Salt Dissolve Faster When More Solvent Is Added? Flashcards
What is the apparatus for this practical?
Teaspoon Table salt 1 beaker 1 jug Water Petra-dish
What is the method? (5)
Put 5ml of table salt into the jug. Use your teaspoon to measure the amount of salt.
Measure 100 ml of water into the beaker.
Pour the 100ml of water into the jug with salt. Wait until the salt dissolves.
If the salt doesn’t dissolve in about a minute or two add another 100ml of water to your jug.
Just keep on doing the fourth step until the salt particles dissolve.
Why does the amount of solvent added effect the rate of dissolving?
Because there are not enough air pockets in a small amount of water, that is the reason why only a bit of salt dissolves. When more solvent is added more air pockets are created, for the salt particles to get into. That is why when more solvent is added the salt particles are able to dissolve quicker.
What is the aim?
To investigate if adding more solvent affects the rate of dissolving.
