  • adults + children 12 yr+: 50-500mg/daily

- children 6-12 yr: 40-120mg/daily

Adverse effects of docusate sodium (Colace)

A
  • GI cramping pain + diarrhea + rashes
  • throat irritation (liquid suspension)
  • PT MUST IMMEDIATELY REPORT rectal irritation + bleeding

A
  • Do not use LONGER than 7 days
  • PTs with GI issues: abd pain, nausea, vomiting
  • PTs with appendicitis, diverticulitis, ulcerative colitis
  • PTs with fecal impaction, bowel obstruction

  • take medication with FULL glass of water
  • mix medication with milk + fruit to prevent throat irritation
  • only use when clearly necessary + use only the LOWEST effective dose
  • STOP USE if rectal bleeding occurrs
