medication used for controlling POSTPARTUM HEMORRHAGE
carboprost tromethamine (Hemabate)
suppresses bleeding primarily by causing intense uterine contractions & partly by causing vasoconstriction.
carboprost tromethamine (Hemabate)
bleeding can generally be stopped in most cases with ONE single dose; IM, 250-mg. IF NEEDED, same dose can be repeated every 15-90 minutes BUT DO NOT EXCEED 2 GRAMS.

Adverse effects for carboprost tromethamine (Hemabate)
-GI reactions/GI upset
-vomiting + diarrhea occurs in up to 60% of patients
-nausea is also V common
-GI reactions can be reduced with PRETREATMENT
with antiemetic + antidiarrheal meds.
-fever is common
-causes vasoconstriction as well as constriction of the
bronchi
-may result in HYPERtension + impaired respirations
Contraindications for carboprost tromethamine (Hemabate)
- acute pelvic inflammatory disease
- active disease of heart, lungs, kidneys, liver
Precautions for carboprost tromethamine (Hemabate)
- Asthma
- HYPERtension
- Diabetes
- Uterine scarring
