Doctrine of Christ Flashcards
lower criticism
the process of attempting to ascertain the original wording of a text.
higher criticism
the study of the literary methods and sources discernible in a text, especially as applied to biblical writings
What assumptions changed regarding the study of the Bible?
god reveals everything through general and natural revelation
What does the search for the historical Jesus assume?
the biblical records give us only as the religious community saw him, not the true historical person
How did Schweitzer end the search for the historical Jesus?
he showed that any attempt at finding the historical Jesus came back with nothing more than what they set out to find
What did Bultmann assert about the quest?
the Biblical record was almost entirely legendary and no other alternative sources exist
What do most scholars believe about the passage on Jesus in Josephus?
a later editor embellished the passage
Can the passage on Jesus in Josephus tell us anything about Christ?
yes it gives us extra-biblical evidence for Jesus
What evidence is there that the tomb in which Christ was buried was empty?
Christianity would not have survived
The empty tomb tradition is an early one
Semitic Nature of the accounts (show early authorship)
Early Christian proclamations of the Gospel proclaim an empty tomb
no rival account of Jesus’ burial
no veneration of the tomb
Women appear in the account
Why is it clear that the resurrection was not made up to suit Greek or Jewish audiences?
Greeks though that the soul left the body after death so the resurrection would have been offensive to them
the jews would have had not concept of one person rising from the dead
What are the reasons for rejecting the theory that the disciples stole the body?
authorities were motivated to secure the tomb
if the soldiers were asleep, how would they know that the disciples stole the body
the disciples were very afraid following the crucifiction
the sound of the stone moving would have woken up the soldiers
a stolen body does not account for the transformation in the disciples
deception was out of character for the disciples
the apostles were martyred for a lie?
What is wrong with the swoon theory?
he was PIERCED IN THE SIDE
the centurion saw no sign of life
the blood was already degraded
he was wrapped in linen
he was left alone
What is wrong with the wrong tomb theory?
The tomb would have been well known
the women knew the location of the tomb from going there three days before
Peter and John also found the tomb
the Romans and Jewish aithorities would not have lost the tomb too
Joseph of A would no tlose it either
What are the reasons for rejecting the theory that the resurrection is a legend?
there is not enough time for legends to arise
the Gospels show evidence of an early date
What is Habermas’s minimal facts approach, and how does it differ from the traditional approach to demonstrating the resurrection?
Habermas’s approach is a lot more simple than others who try to prove the resurrection with ancient documents
simple:
- Jesus dies by crucifiction
- His followers beleive he was resurrected snd appeared to them
- Paul suddenly changed
- James, the brother of Jesus, suddenly changed
- The tomb was empty
