Eschatology
The study of last things
Sheol
place the dead go – righteous and the unrighteous – a place where there would be no hope of return
Gehenna
Ge (valley) henna (himmon – burning)
o Lake of Fire (Rev. 19:20)
o Furnace of Fire (Matt. 13:42, 50)

o Outer Darkness (Matt. 8:12, 22:13, 25:30)
o Worm doesn’t Die (Isa. 66:24, Mark9:46-48)
Post Millennialism
see’s the future as a forward, positive advancement of the church bringing the nations of the world into obedience to the Lord and His kingdom
Cosmic Eschatology
creation destiny
Epiphaneia
appearance/shine forth – glorified body to judge in power: save from final destruction those that await him (Titus 2:13, 1 Tim. 6:14)
Parousia
presence, arrival, Christ’s glorious second coming – the finality of what was begun at His incarnation (2 Peter 1:16, 2 Thess. 2:1)
Amillennialism
Christ’s current reign over the church – this present age (fallen world) is passing away – Christ’s kingdom is coming full
Meaning of, Christian’s live in an ‘already-not yet’ relationship with the king of heaven.
View that the movement towards the complete reign of God’s kingdom began with the Incarnation of Christ which, after His death, Resurrection, Ascension and Pentecost reveals its presence in the life of the believer and the Church.
3 types of Millennialism
Amillennialism
Postmillennialism
Premillennialism
Amillennialism Examples
Hostility towards Christians will Increase.
Believers meet Jesus in the air.
Post millennialism Examples
- Culture becomes Christian
- Great Rebellion
- Believers Gathered with Jesus.
Premillenialism Examples
- Historical: Church goes through tribulation. Rapture/1,000 year reign. Satan defeated once and for all.
- Dispensational: Rapture of the church, Tribulation(7yrs), Physical 1,000yr reign by Christ.
Six sources of proof that gives evidence of our promised future with Christ.
- Faith (Hebrews 11:1)
- Scripture (1 Peter 1:10-11)
- Sealed by the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 1:13-14)
- Resurrection Power in Us (Ephesians 2:6-7)
- Judgment of Separation is in Effect (John 3:18, 36)
- Temporal Removed/Eternal Revealed (Hebrews 12:26-29)
Tribulation? Scripture References
Pretribulation- Christ raptures the church before the great tribulation
o 1 Thes. 1:10; Rev. 3:10
• Postribulation – Christ comes after the great tribulation
o Mt. 24:30-31; Rev. 12
• Other tribulation views:
o Mid – Church removed half-way through tribulation (1 Cor. 15:52)
o Partial – series of raptures
o Imminent - After but anytime if tribulation is happening
Dispensationalism
- A theological view that sees the history of man in a series of segments “dispensations” where God brings blessing to the obedient and judgment to the disobedient. This view:
o Holds a literal view of the bible
o Sees a distinction between the church and Israel in that God has a plan for both
o Glory of God as the ultimate purpose for the world
Historical Cycle of the Church’s attitude in Hell.
Acknowledgement Indifference Ignorance Doubt Denial Irritation Affirmation
Acknowledgement
scripture teaches the intermediate and eternal conscious torment of the wicked.
Church states its position until the cycle begins again
Indifference
negative side/warning to “escape” and “flee” from the “wrath to come” is downplayed/ignored while the positive side of God’s love in Christ is overstated to the exclusion of everything else (Matt. 23:33, Luke 3:7)
Ignorance
people do not know why they should believe in hell (there is avoidance) – no one wants to her a “hell-fire and brimstone” preacher
Doubt
preaching on this doctrine becomes “unkind,” “unloving,” or “negative” – is there really a hell?
Denial
influence of cults or other religions enter/books attack Biblicaal view/heretical views influence believers
Irritation
orthodox theologians ignore the challenge by either down playing the challenge; not enough time to deal with it; passing fad: just ignore
