DNA Structure Flashcards
What are DNA and RNA?
Long chains of nucleotides
What is the nucleotide made of?
A phosphate group
Five-Carbon sugar
One of 5 nitrogen containing bases
What are the four nucleotides of DNA?
(A)denine
(T)hymine
(C)ytosine
(G)uanine
What happens to the nucleotides in RNA?
Uracil replaces Thymine
What is Chargaff’s Rule?
He found that nucleotides are not present in equal number
The number of A/C is almost identical to the number of T/G
What family does Adenine and Guanine belong to?
The Purines
What family does Cytosine and Thymine belong to?
The Pyrimidines
How are the Complimentary base pairs held together?
Hydrogen bonds
DNA strands are ____________
Antiparallel - the phosphate bridges run in opposite directions 5’ to 3’
Where the bridge extends past the sugar it’s 5’, where it doesn’t, it’s 3’
RNA stats
A messenger that can go in and out of the nucleus - it’s single stranded
No Thymine, Uracil is used to bind w/ Adenine
Sugar (ribose) has an extra oxygen that DNA does not (hence DEOXYribonucleic acid)
