DNA structure Flashcards
1
Q
Describe the structure of a DNA molecule:
A
The structure of a DNA molecule is called a double helix. The DNA molecule has nucleotides that have complementary base pairs (adenine, thymine, cytosine and guanine). These complementary base pairs are held together by weak hydrogen bonds.
2
Q
what does a nucleotide consist of and how are they held together
A
phosphate, sugar, bases
held by weak hydrogen bonds between base pairs
stong bonds between nucleotides
3
Q
what are the complementary base pairs
A
adenine, thymine and cytosine, guanine
4
Q
what is a group of three bases called and what does it do
A
triplet/codon: codes for a specific amino acid
5
Q
what can sequencing the human genome result in?
A
- better crime investigations
- improved genetic testing
- personalised medicines
- new gene therapy treatments
