Q

describe what happens in meiosis

A
  1. parent cell contains 46 chromosomes (23 pairs)
  2. the parent cell copies itself to now have 92 chromosomes(46 pairs)
  3. homologous chromosomes pair up and the nuclear membrane disappears
  4. sections of DNA get swapped
  5. spindle fibres form, pairs line up in the middle along the spindle
  6. spindle fibres contract and pull the pairs to different sides of the cell
  7. the cell is divided into two genetically different daughter cells with 46 chromosomes (23 pairs)
  8. they divide again to make genetically different haploid cells known as gametes with 23 chromosomes

Q

what are some differences between mitosis and meiosis?

A

MITOSIS: produce diploid cells, two genetically identical daughter cells, asexual reproduction, occurs everywhere
MEIOSIS: produce haploid cells, 4 genetically different daughter cells, only produce gametes, occurs in sex organs
