DNA/RNA Vocab Flashcards
Chromosomes
A threadlike structure within a cell’s nucleus that contains DNA that is passed from one generation to the next.
Double Helix
The shape of a DNA molecule.
Nitrogen Bases
Molecules that contain nitrogen and other elements that make up the rungs of the DNA
DNA
Deoxyribonucleic acid; the genetic material that carries information about an organism and is passed from parent to offspring.
Adenine
One of the nitrogen bases the cell contains. It is abbreviated as A
Thymine
One of the nitrogen base the cell contains. It is abbreviated as T.
Guanine
One of the nitrogen base the cell contains. It is abbreviated as G.
Cytosine
One of the nitrogen base the cell contains. It is abbreviated as C.
Gene
A section of a DNA molecule that contains the information to the code for one specific protein.
DNA replication
The process in which a identical copy of a DNA strand is formed for a new cell.
RNA
The genetic messenger that carries the genetic code from DNA inside the nucleus to the cytoplasm.
Uracil
A nitrogen base which is found only in RNA, it takes the place of the nitrogen base thymine.
