Dna Replication Flashcards
1
Q
What does the semi - conservative replication of dna ensure
A
Genetic continuity between generations of cells
2
Q
What is the semi-conservative theory
A
Strand of dna replicates resulting in 2 DNA molecules with one original strand and one new strand
3
Q
Describe the process of semi conservative dna replication
A
- DNA helicase causes strands to unwind by breaking hydrogen bonds, forming a replication fork
- Each exposed strand acts as a template to which complimentary free nucleotides are attracted
- DNA polymerase helps join adjacent nucleotides (condensation reaction)and a sugar-phosphate backbone is formed + h bonds between complementary bases are formed
- DNA ligase seals strand
- Each new DNA molecule contains one original strand and one new strand
