dna replication Flashcards
1
Q
what are parts 1 and 2 of DNA replication?
A
part 1: separation of DNA strands
part 2: synthesis of new daughter strands
2
Q
explain what happens in part 1 of DNA replication
A
- DNA replicates at the ORI (origin of replication)
- helicase (enzyme) unwinds the double helix by breaking the hydrogen bonds between complementary base pairs in parental strands
- parental strands are used as TEMPLATE
3
Q
explain what happens in part 2 of DNA replication
A
- free deoxyribonucleotides (A, C, G, T) are incorporated onto parental strands by complementary base pairing
- DNA polymerase catalyses the formation of phosphodiester bonds between deoxyribonucleotides
- 2 DNA molecules would have been formed, consisting of 1 parental and 1 daughter strand. the molecules wind to form a double helix
