DNA replication Flashcards
1
Q
Describe the process of DNA replication.
A
- The two strands of the DNA unwind and unzip exposing the bases.
- Each strand acts as a template for the synthesis of a new complementary strand.
- So in the each of the two new molecules of DNA produced, one strand is maintained/pre-existing and one strand is newly synthesised.
2
Q
Explain why the replication of a DNA molecule is termed semi-conservative.
A
- In the process of DNA replication, the two strands of the DNA separate and each strand is used as a template for the synthesis of a new complementary strand.
- So in the each of the two new molecules of DNA produced, one strand is maintained/pre-existing and one strand is newly synthesised.
3
Q
Explain why DNA needs to be replicated prior to cell division.
A
- To ensure that both daughter cells receive an identical copy of the DNA to the parent cell.
