DNA replication Flashcards
What is the name given to the method of copying when two polynucleotide chains act as a template to create two identical structures?
semi-conservative replication
Where does semi-conservative replication take place?
before cell division (meiosis and mitosis)
How do the two strands separate?
H bonds are broken between complimentary bases by DNA helicase
What enzyme links the sugar and phosphate groups of nucleotides?
DNA polymerase
What is the process of semi-conservative replication?
-DNA unwinds as H bonds between complimentary bases are broken by DNA helicase
-DNA molecule separates into 2 strands
-both strands act as a template which free nucleotides attach to by complimentary base pairs
-nucleotides join together through condensation reaction with DNA polymerase
-each DNA molecule is now genetically identical to the original DNA molecule and contains 1 new strand and 1 original strand
What is conservative replication of DNA?
one daughter cell receives the original DNA molecule and the other cell receives a complimentary new copy
What is non conservative DNA replication?
original DNA is destroyed completely and two new identical DNA molecules are synthesised
What is dispersive DNA replication?
original DNA is dispersed or distributed randomly into each of the daughter molecules
