DNA Replication Flashcards
DNA polymerase
An enzyme that catalyses formation of DNA from activated deoxyribose nucleotides, using single stranded DNA as a template
Helicase
Enzyme that catalyses the breaking of hydrogen bonds between the nitrogenous pairs of bases in a DNA molecule
Semi conservative replication
Two new molecules formed , each containing one old and one new strand. One old strand is conserved in each new molecule
What enzyme unwinds the DNA?
The gyrase enzyme
What enzyme unzip the DNA
Helicase
What does DNA polymerase do?
Catalyses the addition of the new nucleotide bases in the 5’ to 3’ direction
What dies the ligase enzyme do?
Joins fragmented lagging strand together
What scientists conducted an experiment showing replication is semiconervative
Meselson and stahl
What was the experiment for semiconservative replication ?
They grew e coli in 15N ( heavy)
Then left it in 14N untill it replicated
The DNA after one replication was hybrid DNA
They divided once more and one was hybrid one was light 15N
