DNA history and structure Flashcards
DNA
stores and transmits your genetic information from parent to offspring
Codes for your genes
Made of repeating subunits called nucleotides
DNA Story
Began in 1869 when Friedrich Mieshcher investigated a compound in the nucleus he called nuclein (now known as DNA).
In the 1920’s the chemical components of nuclein were discovered but they could not prove that it was responsible for heredity.
In the 1920’s Phoebus Levene discovered the _ main components of DNA.
In the 1930’s Joachim Hammerling conducted experiments on verified that genetic material was located in the nucleus.
In 1940, Erwin Chargaff discovered the base pairing rule.
1952 Alfred Hershey & Martha Chase conducted experiments on bacterial viruses and he was able to prove that DNA was the hereditary material.
1953 Watson & Crick created the first MODEL OF dna.
Nucleotides
3 Parts:
1. nitrogen base (C-N ring)
- Pentose sugar (5C, cyclic)
Ribose in RNA
Deoxyribose in DNA
3) phosphate (PO4) group with a negative charge.
RNA & DNA
RNA:
single nucelotide chain
DNA:
double nucleotide chain
N bases bond in pairs across chains
spiraled in a double helix
Double helix first proposed as a structure in 1953 by James Watson & Francis Crick
Structure of DNA
n 1951 Rosalind Franklin studied DNA with ____crystallography____________ which allowed her to see the structure of DNA.
Watson & Crick worked with _rosalind_________and created their model demonstrating the molecular structure of DNA and the double helix.
Consists of:
2 strands of repeating DNA nucleotides that run in opposite directions
The chemical backbone is made of alternating phosphate groups and pentose sugars
The bases (A, T, G, C) are attached to the backbone
Complementary base pairing occurs (A with T, G with C)
