DNA & Cell Replication Flashcards
Why is DNA replication important?
For growth, repair, and cellular reproduction.
What are chromosomes?
The compressed form of DNA.
What is chromatin?
condensed DNA.
Mitosis phases acronym
IPMAT
What happens in the interphase of mitosis?
DNA replicates.
What happens in the prophase of mitosis?
Chromatin in the cell condenses into chromosomes.
What happens in the metaphase of mitosis?
The chromosomes line up at the equatorial plane.
What happens in the anaphase of mitosis?
Sister chromatids disjoin and move to opposite poles.
What happens in the telophase of mitosis?
Chromosomes decondense and the cell divides in a process called cytokinesis.
Explain the structure of chromosomes
- Two chromatids
- Held by a centromere
What’s a sister chromatid?
A chromatid which is an identical copy of another chromatid on a chromosome.
