DNA and Protein Synthesis Flashcards
Where does transcription occur?
In the nucleus of a cell
Where does translation occur?
Ribosomes
What is transcription?
Transcription is when the base codes are transcribed onto messenger RNA (mRNA)
What is translation?
Translation is when the ribosome ‘reads’ the base codes on the mRNA and translates the sequence of bases into a sequence of amino acids which make up proteins
What does transfer RNA (tRNA) do?
The anticodons match the complementary base pairs to the codon on the mRNA
What is the genome?
The entire genetic material of an organism
What is a gene?
A short length of DNA found on a chromosome that codes for a specific protein
Where are chromosomes found?
In the nucleus of the cells
What is DNA?
Deoxyribonucleic acid
How many pairs of chromosomes are there in a human?
23 pairs of chromosomes
How many chromosomes in total are there in a human?
46 chromosomes
How is DNA structured?
A double helix
What are nucleotides?
The individual units of DNA
What are the four different bases?
Adenine, Cytosine, Thymine and Guanine
What are the base pairs?
Adenine - Thymine
Cytosine - Guanine
