DNA Flashcards
DNA
Deoxyribonucleic acid- the molecule in the nucleus that carries our genetic code.
It is found in the nucleus of cells.
Is a polymer made up of two strands joined together.
Chromosome
A chromosome is a strand of DNA- each human has 46 of them in order to function properly
Gene
A gene is a section of a chromosome that codes for a particular characteristic (protein).
Allele
An allele is a variation of a gene- each gene contains two allele
Protein
A protein is a long chain of amino acids in a particular order. The order of these amino acids is coded for by a gene.
Amino acid
An amino acid is a molecule that forms a protein when arranged in a particular order.
Nucleotide
A nucleotide is what makes up DNA.
Each nucleotide is made up of:
-A Sugar
-A phosphate
-A base (A, T, G, C)
A binds with T
G binds with C
These bonds are exclusive
Double Helix
The way DNA structure is described as:
A double stranded, double-helix molecule
Genome
The genome of an organism is the entire genetic material of that organism (i.e. all of the chromosomes and a small amount of DNA found in the mitochondria).
The human genome contains approx 21,000 genes.
