DNA Flashcards
Who discovered DNA?
Watson and Crick in 1953 with the help of Rosalind Franklin and Maurice Wilkins
What are chromosomes?(3)
Chromosomes are structures found inside the nuclei of cells.
These contain long strips of DNA.
Our body contains 23 pairs(46 total) of chromosomes.
What does DNA do?
Stores the genetic information in genes which codes proteins which determines characteristics of an organism.
Where do chromosomes come from?
From both gametes sperm and egg cell which each carry 23 chromosomes. When fused, the zygote contains 46 chromosomes.
Describe the structure of DNA
-> sugar phosphate backbone
-> double helix
-> 4 base pairs:
Cytosine-Guanine
Thymine- Adenine
Alleles
A version of a gene (we get two copies of each gene)
Dominant allele
Capital letter in a punnet table. The gene that will always pass to the next generation.
Recessive allele
Normal letter in punnet table. The gene that will be less probable to pass onto the next generation.
