DNA Flashcards
Describe the structure of DNA
Sugar phosphate back bone with complementary bases joined by hydrogen bonds
What type of bond joins the deoxyribose sugar to the phosphate group
Covalent
What way does DNA spiral
Clockwise (right - handed)
What does antiparallel strands mean
Strands line up 5’ to 3’ and 3’ to 5’
What are the complementary base pairs
Adenine and Thymine
Cytosine and Guanine
Which two bases are purine
Guanine and Adenine
2 H bonds
Which two bases are pyrimidine
Thymine and Cytosine (think Y)
3 H bonds
Which is the leading strand of DNA
5’ to 3’
Describe the process of DNA replication
- DNA molecule unzips as H bonds break between base pairs
- Primer must be present at 3’ end
- Enzyme DNA polymerase adds nucleotides to the template DNA strand in a replication fork (replication strand)
- Leading strand of DNA replicated
- On lagging strands, okazaki fragments are formed and are regulated discontinuously
- DNA ligase joins fragments together
- 2 new identical double helix formed
Why is DNA replication a semi-conservative process
Contains one new strand and one original strand
What enzymes are involved in DNA replication
DNA polymerase to add nucleotides
DNA ligase joins together okazaki fragments
What are the names of the fragments from the lagging strand
Okazaki
List the stages in mitosis
Prophase Metaphase Anaphase Telophase Cytokinesis
Describe Prophase
chromosomes condense
nuclear membranes dissapear
Spindle fibres form from the centriole
Describe Metaphase
chromosomes alligned at equator of the cell
Attatched by fibre to each centriole
*Max concentration of chromosome *
