DNA Flashcards
what is DNA?
genetic information that is passed from parents to offspring
Where is DNA in the cell
the nucleus
what is the structure of DNA?
twisted ladder, called a double helix
describe the relationship between chromosomes, genes and DNA
There are 46 chromosomes in a nucleus of a cell. Chromosomes contain DNA and genes are segments of DNA which code for specific proteins.
what is a nucleolotide?
nucleotides make up DNA and RNA, they are made up of deoxyribose sugar, phosphate and a nitrogenous base
what are the 4 bases in DNA? what pairs with what?
adenine pairs with thymine, cytosine pairs with guanine
what holds together the bases in DNA?
hydrogen bonds
what is RNA?
Ribonucleic acid, codes and decodes genetic information.
describe how DNA and RNA are similar and how they differ
DNA: 2 strands, deoxyribose sugar, located in nucleus, A pairs with T, function is to pass genetic info from parent to offspring
RNA: 1 strand, ribose sugar, located in ribosome, A pairs with U, function is to code and decode genetic info
