Irritability in DMDD is persistent and present over many months
BPAD has discrete episodes of mood changes (irritable or euphoric) that are markedly different from the child’s usual baseline
What are some features of a manic or hypo manic episode that may distinguish it from DMDD?
Increased energy and goal directed activity
Decrease need for sleep
Pressured speech
Flight of ideas
Grandiosity
How can DMDD be differentiated from ODD? (HINT: emotions and context)
Angry and irritable mood and temper outbursts more severe in DMDD
In ODD symptoms may be confined to one setting whereas in DMDD symptoms must occur in at least two settings.
Can DMDD and ODD co-occur?
No - if mood disturbance is severe enough to meet criteria for DMDD then a diagnosis of DMDD is given
DMDD trumps ODD
How can DMDD be differentiated from ADHD?
Impulsiveness and disorganised attention are not core features of DMDD
How can DMDD be differentiated from MDD?
In MDD, irritability only occurs in the context of a depressive episode
