Cryptococcosis is the most common systemic fungal disease in cats, caused by the Cryptococcus neoformans–Cryptococcus gattii species complex.
How do cats acquire cryptococcosis?
Cats acquire the infection from contaminated environments, particularly through inhalation of basidiospores.
What environmental sources are associated with Cryptococcus species?
Avian guano (especially pigeon droppings) and decaying vegetation are associated with Cryptococcus species.
What are the clinical forms of cryptococcosis in cats?
The disease can present in nasal, central nervous system (CNS), cutaneous, and systemic forms.
What are the typical signs of nasal cryptococcosis in cats?
Nasal cryptococcosis can cause severe nasal deformation.
How is cryptococcosis diagnosed in cats?
Diagnosis is commonly made through antigen detection in body fluids using the cryptococcal antigen latex agglutination serology blood test.
What treatments are available for cryptococcosis in cats?
Treatments include amphotericin B, ketoconazole, fluconazole, and itraconazole. Surgical excision of nodules may also assist recovery.
