DM (HHS and DKA) Flashcards
Understanding the differences of DKA and HHS and their complexity
What is make by the beta cells of the pancreas?
HINT: 2 things
Insulin and amylin
What is make by the alpha cells of the pancreas?
Glucagon and works opposite of insulin
What does Amylin do?
Where is it made?
Slows gastric emptying, supresses glucagon secretion, and increase satiety
Made by the beta cells of the pancreas
What is the main fuel for the body? Where is it stored and what is it stored as?
Glucose is stored as glycogen in the liver and muscles
What lab test are assessed?
HINT: 5
What are the lab test diagnositic criteria for DM?
Dx of DM
A1c (greater than 6.5)
Fasting Glucose: >126 mg/dL
Random glucose >200mg/dL
Oral glucose tolerance test
Antibodies for type 1
What is Hypoglycemia?
What can occur if blood sugar get that low?
Is the onset sudden or gradual?
Blood sugar <70mg/dL
Cognitive impairment can occur (ex: neurologic s/s b/c brain needs glucose to function properly)
Immediate treatment is needed
SUDDEN ONSET
