What is concurrent?
On going monitoring of drug therapy to ensure positive patient outcomes
What is retrospective?
review after pt has received treatment: detects patterns in any part of the med use process
What are the MUE targets?
- Medication
- Med class
- Disease state
- Med use process
What is the med use process?
- Acquisition
- Storage
- Distribution
- Prescribing
- Preparing
- Dispensing
- Administering

What is criteria?
The policy or procedure being evaluated
What is standard?
The performance expectation (Ideally we would have 100% of all cases in compliance with the criteria)
What is data collection?
Determine which specific criteria to study and scope
Have IT send you a spreadsheet of raw data of characteristics specified above
Read all relevant pt charts
What are the steps MUE?
- Establish responsibility
- Develop scope of activities and define objectives
- Establish criteria for review of the med., policy, etc
- Data collection
- Data analysis
- Feedback to prescribers
- Make action plan
- Follow up
What is criteria developed?
From literature
What do new studies prompt?
An MUE to evaluate our policy
