DL: Case studies of renal dysfunction Flashcards
T/F: primary GIT dz will impact on renal function
True
T/F: Large bowel diarrhoea is usually a primary GIT problem
True
T/F: melena usually a primary GIT problem
True
T/F: renal disease usually causes vomiting, not diarrhoea
True
Describe the TP and PCV of young dogs (healthy, generally)
- high PCV
- low TP
Is a USG of 1.003 hyposthenuric?
Yes - kidney can dilute urine thus not in renal failure
Signs - dehydration on biochem
increased TP in conjunction with high albumin and high globulin
Does acidosis –> hyperkalaemia?
Yes - as H+ increases in cells in acidosis, K+ ions diffuse out of cells as they are the most permeable cation. This causes hyperkalaemia.
Can a renal problem cause increased amylase?
Yes - because amylase is predominantly excreted by kidneys
What you expect (normally) with hypercalcaemia in terms of PTH?
low PTH
Can hypercalcaemia be a cause of high liver enzymes?
Yes
If biochemically normal but PU/PD, is it likely that the PD is causing the PU?
Yes
Purpose - water deprivationt est
determines kidney ability to concentrate urine
When is a water deprivation test dangerous?
If lack ADH as can become severely dehydrated and ultimately die if severe dehydrated status not recognised. Use objective criteria to recognise this. Can take a long time (up to 72 hours)
What findings would you expect with CDI?
- USG
