DKA + HHS Flashcards
What is a major sign of DKA?
Acetone breath
What are 6 causes of DKA + HHS?
- Illness
- Pregnancy
- Hypothyroidism
- CVD
- Trauma
- Stroke
What is hyperglycemia caused by?
Impaired glucose transport
What do you do first to optimally treat patients DKA?
Start IV fluids to fluid resuscitate
What are the initial fluids that should be given?
Rapid, large-volume boluses
What infusion rate for initial fluids typically appropriate for most adult patients?
1000 ml/hr x 2-4 doses
What are used for maintenance fluids?
Balanced crystalloids
What is the infusion rate for maintenance fluids?
150-200 ml/hr until blood glucose is 200-300
Once blood glucose is controlled what should be added is the anion gap is not resolved?
Dextrose
What are 4 fluids that can be used for DKA?
- Normal saline
- Plasmalyte
- Lactated Ringets
- 1/2 normal saline
After starting fluid resuscitation, what is the next step to manage DKA?
Correct electrolyte abnormalities
