Divisions of the nervous system Flashcards
what are the divisions of the nervous system
the central and peripheral
what is the central nervous system?
receives information from the senses and controls the behaviour and the regulation of the bodies psychological processes.
what is the central nervous system made up of?
the brain and the spinal cord
describe the brain?
provides conscious awareness and is involved in psychological processes.
what does the brain consists of
four main regions: occupational lobe temporal lobe parietal lobe Frontal lobe
what is the occupational lobe
processes vital information
what is the temporal lobe
processes auditory information
what is the parietal lobe
integrates information from different senses and plays an important role in spatial navigation.
what is the frontal lobe?
associated with higher order functions including planning, abstract reasoning and logic.
what is the spinal cord?
transfers messages to and from the brain and the rest of the body. responsible for simple reflex actions e.g. taking hand from hot surface
what is the brain stem
connects the brain and the spinal cord, controls involuntary processes e.g. breathing
what is the peripheral nervous system
connects the brain and the spinal cord to the rest of the body and the external environment. transmits information to and from the cns.
what are the two components of the central nervous system
autonomic nervous system and somatic nervous system
what is the somatic nervous system
controls voluntary movements, transmits or receives messages from the senses is involved in
what does the somatic nervous system consist of
sensory nerve pathways and motor nerve pathways
