SNS PNS
What is the HNS?
a complex network of nerve cells
that carry messages to and from the brain and the spinal chord to different parts of the body
What is the CNS?
(4)
-comprises the brain and spinal cord. -brain is divided into separate areas, each has a different function; rang ing from controlling thought and speech to controlling skills and balance.
-function of the spinal cord is to relay information between the brain and the rest of the body.
-only relay neurons
What is the PNS?
-comprises the nerves outside the CNS (sensory and motor).
-It relays nerve impulses between the CNS and the rest of the body. (connects cns to organs, limbs and skin
What are the 2 divisions of the pns?
-autonomic nervous system
-somatic nervous systems
What is the ans?
Nerves which communicate with internal organs and glands
What does the ans do?
controls involuntary actions that we have no conscious control over (breathing and heartbeat).
-connects to internal organs and glands
what are the 2 divisions of the ANS?
-sympathetic nervous system, which has an arousing effect on the body, such as preparing the body for ‘Fight or Flight’; -the parasympathetic nervous system, which has a calming effect and helps the body return to homeostasis after a period of excitation
what is an example of the pns calming effect?
rest and digest response
what is the somatic nervous system?
consists of sensory neurons which receive input from sense organs and send output to the brain and motor neurons which receive input from sense organs and send output from the cns to control voluntary muscle movement
