Divisions Of The Nervous System Flashcards

Q
Divisions of the nervous system
A
The nervous system is split into it’s two components. This is the CNS (central nervous system) and the PNS (peripheral nervous system)

Q
Central nervous system
A
- This is made up of the brain and spinal cord, and it’s two main functions are the control of behaviour and the regulation of the physiological processes
- The brain is the centre of conscious awareness and it does two things: it receives information from sensory receptors and sends messages to muscle glands in the body.
- The spinal cord is an extension of the brain. It plays a major part in the body’s physiological processes as it consists of nerve cells which are attached to the brain and run the length of the spinal column

Q
Peripheral nervous system
A
- This consists of all other nerves which are not part of the CNS, reaching out to the other parts of the body all the way down to the very tips of your toes as well as to you internal organs
- They relay information via nerve impulses (an electrical signal) from the rest of the body back to the CNS
- It is divided further into two parts: the somatic nervous system and the autonomic nervous system
