What was the difference between senior offices and rank and file soldiers?
Senior officers often were drawn from the landed political elite and led negotiations with the King via the Heads of Proposals.
Rank and file soldiers were outside the traditional political nation (e.g., middle and lower class)
How did the politicization of the army put senior officers in a difficult position?
E.g., Cromwell, believed in supremacy of Parliament but sympathized with some of the men’s demands.
But: also alarmed at the spread of Leveller ideas in the Army - especially social and political ideas.
