when kurshchev came to power,he made a speech critiscising stalins policies and brought in measure to detsalinise the USSR.

the ussr used the hungarian uprising to send a message
. after the second world war, the USSR helped put matyas rakosi, a brutal stalinist in charge of hungary. his authoritarian regime became increasingly unpopular. in october people of budapest protested against the government of rakoski.
.krushchev allowed the liberal imre nagy to take over from rakoski as hungarian prime minister. nagy hoped that hungary would be a nuetral state.
.krushchev , who only had power for 2 years also wanted this crisis to aserti his authority.
.soviet tanks invaded hungary in novmeber 1956. thousands of hungarians were killed or wounded , nagy was arrested and hanged. janod kadar became prime minister and ensure loyalty towards ussr.
the crisis strengthened the ussr and descredited the west.
krushchevs brutal response to hungary demonstrated to satellite states that disloyalty wouldnt be tolerated, it also showed the western powers that the ussr was still in control.
.it was a turning point for krushchev his actions reasserted his authority over the satellite states and destroyed any illusions in the west that his leadership signified as a thaw in the cold war.
